The most recent addition to Peugeot's stable, the 208 is everything a modern supermini should be - efficient, economic, comparatively spacious and fun. If you want efficiency and economy, there's a petrol and a diesel engine in the range that dip under CO2 of 100g/km. If you want room, the 208 is even bigger than the 207 on the inside. The 208's rear leg room and boot space (which from mid-spec up houses 60-40 rear seat split functionality) belies its supermini status. The external styling has been modernised and inside the dash is playful, functional and exciting. From the 'zing' of the dials at start-up to panoramic roof, touchscreen array to impressive sound system, the 208 has fun throughout. Female drivers might want to get their paws on the styling of the 208 'Feline'.

Since the 90s Peugeot has struggled to keep up with the quality everyday road cars Ford has consistently turned out. With the release of the 208 in 2012, however, the French manufacturer has put itself right back on the map.

The Peugeot 208 is a sophisticated supermini with a smart interior, comfortable ride and a number of efficient engine options. It might not quite be the car to usurp the Fords, but it's an excellent option for first time drivers, especially those looking for a used supermini.

Why buy a used 208?

The Peugeot 208 was released in 2012 as a replacement for the 207 - a car that at times struggled to contend with some of the better superminis on the market. The 208 takes what was good about its predecessor and builds on it. The result is a smart, sophisticated small car perfect for city driving.

Peugeots across the board are known for their smooth ride and the 208 is no different. Despite its relatively small size it is a good cruiser at mid speeds, and its solid frame and interior keeps the cabin noise down to a minimum. Steering is tight and agile, and even though it won't set the world alight in terms of any sporting prowess, it's light and nimble on city roads.

As to be expected, engine options mostly sit down in the lower range and all offer reasonable efficiency. The entry level model is a 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol, but best of the bunch is the 1.4 litre HDI, which boasts a decent torque output and a very respectable 74.3mpg.

For those looking for the best power offering, the 118bhp 1.6 litre petrol has more pep than other models, but this does mean its efficiency isn't quite as attractive. At the other end of the scale is the 1.0 VTi Access three-door model, whose emissions come in under the 100g/km road tax threshold and is normally offered at a low tag price - especially on the used supermini market.

Inside the cabin there is room to seat four adults comfortably. The boot also offers good space, but only the mid-spec models offer 60/40 split seats for boot extension. Equipment levels are good, but the more basic, entry level models offer less than some competitors in the way of kit.

The Peugeot 208 admittedly doesn't quite live up to the high benchmark set by others in its class, like the Ford Fiesta. But overall it offers some great features and at a good price. It's for this reason that the Peugeot 208 is probably best suited to first time drivers and city drivers looking for a good, affordable option, especially for those looking on the used market.

What should I look for when buying a used 208?

Some Peugeot 208s have had trouble with their gearboxes - specifically the reverse gear. When you take it out on a test drive, check that it slides into reverse easily. If not, it might require repair work.
Check that all infotainment systems and touchscreens are working when you start up. If they show any error messages or if some elements aren't working then it will require a trip to the dealer for this to be reset. This has been a common complaint for 208s.
A batch of 208s were recalled as a result of reduced brake performance due to air in the braking system. On a test drive check that the brakes are responsive. The problem can be fixed free of charge at the dealer if present.
Make sure to thoroughly check the exterior of the car for any rust or dents before going out on your test drive.
There have been problems with the bonnet release latch on some 208s. Make sure when you view the car that you can open and close the bonnet properly.
Peugeot 208s have some common faults worth keeping an eye out for - particularly the electrics - but given their affordable price and good efficiency, they're reliable enough as a car for first time buyers or as a city run-around.
