Expert Opinion

Like its siblings the A3 and A4 - of which it is essentially an upgraded model - the A5 ticks all the boxes of stereotypical German design: handsome, powerful and refined. Naturally sportier than the A4, the 7.8 seconds it takes the entry-level 1.8 turbocharged petrol to hit 62mph shows it to be no slouch, while the characteristic Audi style gives both inside and out a desirability that makes it as enjoyable to drive as it is to be seen driving. A big boot means it is practical too, but with limited rear passenger space it's a car primarily designed for those in the driving seat.

About Audi A5

A large, premium coupé, the Audi A5 is one of the most powerful and spacious cars in the Audi range. Dynamic to drive, comfortable inside and a smooth, refined cruiser, the A5 is a sophisticated and highly desirable Audi.

Based on the smaller and less sporty A4, the A5 was released in 2007 and has found itself constantly in demand. This makes finding a good one hard, but all more satisfying when you finally do join the coveted A5 club.

Why buy a used A5?

As a sporty coupé, the performance of the Audi A5 is one of its strongest attributes. The engine options are plentiful - as in most Audi models - and include an entry-level 1.8 TFSI petrol engine with 168bhp, as well as a pair of more impressive 3.0 TDI engines which offer serious performance and refinement. Even the entry level models offer serious speed and power, with the largest option hitting 62mph from standstill in a swift 5.8 seconds.

Handling is accurate and agile, although the steering offers little feedback and gives the car a feel of less involvement that its rivals (such as the 3 Series). Entry-level models come with just the option of front wheel drive, but the bigger engines offer quattro all-wheel drive which, despite its sporty aspirations, makes the A5 a better cruiser than it is swift sportscar. All models are excellently refined however, and make it a typically comfortable Audi in which drivers would be happy to spend long amounts of time in.

There's plenty of space and practicality in the A5 which makes it far more usable and functional than some of its contemporaries. A cavernous boot manages to stretch in 480 litres of luggage, and can be extended out to 980 litres with the rear seats folded. Cars released post 2011 even include three seats in the back, which makes it a competent family car - albeit a premium one.

While the A5 might not be quite as good as some of its rivals, it is an excellent alternative which mixes premium desirability, quality materials, a dynamic drive and sleek elegant looks. More suited to cruising than racing however, it might be better thought of as a sporty GT than a energetic coupé.

The Audi A5 was released in 2007 as a replacement for the A4 cabriolet model and was based on the Audi MLP platform. Alongside the TT and the R8, the A5 is the third coupé in the Audi lineup.
An A5 Cabriolet model was unveiled at the 2009 New York Auto Show and included a fabric roof instead of a retractable hardtop.
The A5 Sportback was released that same year, and featured a lower and longer tapered roofline, giving it a sporty performance.
In 2012, all models were updated to included new front and rear lights and a revised bumper design.

What should I look for when buying a used A5?

When taking it out for a test drive, make sure that the engine management light on the dashboard lights up and then goes out, and that there is no black or blue smoke coming from the exhaust. These could mean there is a problem with the EGR and will need to be fixed.
Another sign of EGR problems is a low level of coolant, which would indicate the EGR valve coolers are faulty, or that the coolant pump is failing. Check the reservoir underneath the boot to check the levels.
Make sure that the DPF warning light on the dashboard goes out after 5-10 minutes of driving. If it doesn't this could mean there is a problem with the Diesel Particulate Filter and could cause major problems in the long run.
Inside the car, check that the MMI (Multimedia Interface) is working as it should. As it controls many of the car's functions and applications it is important that things like the sat nav and stereo all work properly, without delay or fault.
When on the road check to see that gear changes are smooth and easy. If not and they are jerky and uneasy in urban stop start traffic, it could be a sign that the Multitronic gearbox will need to be re-calibrated.
The A5 is known to be quite hard on tyres - especially the S-Line and Sport models with harder suspension. Check that the tread is even and legal (a depth of 1.6mm above the base) on all.
