Launched in 1996 alongside its Peugeot Partner sibling, the Citroen Berlingo was a new compact van for the French manufacturer. Using the same platform as the Citroen ZX and Peugeot 306 at the time, it offered a car-like experience behind the wheel from the outset. An MPV version (called the Multispace) hit the road a few years later, with a second-generation arriving in 2008, growing in size and gaining a more modern look.

The latest third-generation Berlingo was introduced in 2019, bringing a more modern design, additional interior space and more efficient engines. It also received a technology boost, with the majority of versions featuring an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Why buy a used Berlingo?

The small van segment remains a very competitive field, and the Citroen Berlingo is one of the most accomplished models around. High up on the reasons to consider it is for its car-like feel thanks to its car-based underpinnings, as opposed to those of a van. It's offered with a great range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, which suit the Berlingo well, while its impressive levels of refinement and comfort make it ideal for those doing plenty of miles.

It's also very practical considering its relatively compact dimensions, with customers being able to choose between two body lengths depending on their needs. Combined with rapid charging (its battery can be topped up to 80 per cent in just 30 minutes), it may prove an ideal alternative to a regular petrol or diesel.

Here's a short history of the Citroen Berlingo, which dates back to 1996.

The Citroen Berlingo was launched in 1996 alongside its sibling product, the Peugeot Partner. It was sold as both a panel van and 'Multispace' MPV version.
Citroen unveiled the second-generation Berlingo in 2008, with the model growing in size, and offered in two body lengths for the first time.
An electric Berlingo arrived in 2013, though was limited by a small claimed range of 105 miles.
The model would be regularly updated, with a 2015 revision giving the model a more modern bumper and a new 7-inch touchscreen on higher-spec models.
A third-generation Berlingo van launched in late 2018, gaining a smarter design, more technology and greater efficiency.
A next-generation electric e-Berlingo model arrived in 2021, offering a credible range of up to 171 miles and impressive rapid charging times when hooked up to a 100kW DC rapid charger.

What should I look for when buying a used Berlingo?

Citroen gearboxes can get quite loose as the years go by, so check that the gearshift doesn’t feel too 'baggy' or vague.
As with any van, make sure that the sliding and rear doors open and close as they should – be particularly aware of damage in these areas.
The touchscreen system can be a bit temperamental, so make sure it operates as it should, and that the smartphone mirroring function works.
