Now over ten years old, the Citroen C3 stands out as one of the most eye catching and vibrant cars in the stylish supermini class. A windscreen extending into the roof in the latest generation creates a roomy and airy feel in the cabin, but even without the extra light it remains spacious. Especially in the boot, which at 300 litres is close to being market leading. On the road however, the focus is on comfort and a stable ride, which means that the bulk of the C3's excitement is in its looks, not in how it drives.

About Citroen C3

The Citroen C3 is a supermini with bags of city style, a fun and efficient drive and good run costs. An airy and funky cabin extends the C3's sharp style while remaining practical, making it a comfortable and competent supermini.

Citroen's biggest selling small car, the C3 is affordable, efficient and fun; all of which makes it one of the best value offerings in a competitive class known for its value-for-money.

Why buy a used C3?

Like much of the Citroen range, one of the most instantly attractive aspects of the C3 is its chic, city style, which gives it a smooth but short bonnet, a rounded roof-line and large bulbous windows. The windows let plenty of light into the cabin, while clever design flourishes - such as the ringed alloys - give it a playful-yet-grownup edge.

Inside, the airy and bright cabin is comfortable and more spacious than many of its rivals. A carefully designed dashboard featuring simple yet useful functions in the latest generation is a considerable step up from its predecessor, while its boot (300 litres) is bigger than that of the Ford Focus, but not quite as big as the VW Polo. Along with its generous leg room for both driver and passengers, and comfortable seats, the C3 is a car that offers far more than its supermini title suggests.

On the road the C3 is at its best when at conservative, inner city speeds, but it is surprisingly able on the motorway, too. Good suspension manages to keep it calm and smooth on all but the most uneven of roads, while its low cabin noise and refined engines make it a competent long distance cruiser, too. Handling isn't particularly energetic or dynamic, but it is far from terrible, and only occasionally suffers from vague understeer.

A number of different engine options exist, but all follow the same requirements of efficiency and refinement above out and out performance. The most efficient is the 1.4 eHDi Airdream, which manages an average mpg of 83.1 and emits just 87g/km of CO2. A 1.4 litre VTi petrol option is brisk and nippy, recording a 0 to 60 time of a competent, but not outstanding, 10.8 seconds. The entry level 1.1i VT offers excellent value to buy outright, but is best overlooked in the long run in favour of one of the better performing, cleaner engines.

The Citroen C3 was first launched in 2001 and has spawned a number of different models.

Here is a short history of the Citroen C3, starting with its launch in 2001.

The first Citroen C3 was unveiled at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show and went on sale the following year.
The Citroen C3 Pluriel, a C3 variant which included removable panels which transformed it into a partial convertible was unveiled in 2003.
In 2006 the C3 was given a minor facelift which saw the front bumper receive a more eye catching design, while the interior also underwent a number of revisions.
A mini-MPV variant - the C3 Picasso - was released at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, and went on to find considerable success.
At the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show the second generation C3 was launched, and featured a more rounded design and a selection of added engine options.
In 2013 a facelifted C3 was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show and featured an updated exterior and interior that included LED running lights and new tail light clusters.

What should I look for when buying a used C3?

Check the full exterior of the car, making sure that all panels and bumpers are fitted correctly and the same colour. Early model C3s are reported to suffer from a problem with poorly sealed bumpers.
Check that all electronics including air con, radio and any electric windows are working as they should. A fault in either one could be indicative of something bigger.
Leave the engine running and listen for any misfiring or unsettled idling. This could be a sign of a faulty injector sensor and could lead to costly repair work.
Check to see if there is any build up or drops of oil under the car once it has been standing for about 10-15 minutes. If there are, it could indicate that the sump gasket is leaking and needs to be replaced.
Cars built before 2003 have been known to suffer from faulty - or snapped - front springs. If the front of the car sits low down then this is likely to be the case.
Any noises coming from the suspension when driving over uneven ground could mean that the drop link needs replacing.
