Expert Opinion

Launched in 1990, the French supermini is the only car to be named European Car of the Year twice: once in its first year and again 15 years later. With the Clio I (90-98), Clio II (98-2012) and Clio III (06-13), Renault continues to offer fun, fashionable driving on a budget. The incredible number of trims means that there's a car perfect for every driver while there's an (almost) equally formidable choice of engines. The interior was updated in 2001 to offer a touch more quality and while extremely tall drivers might be better looking elsewhere, for younger drivers looking for a good value drive (particularly in the diesel offering), there are few cars that can beat the Clio. The new, muscular 2012 hatchback (which includes Renault's R-Link integrated tablet technology) looks like it's going to be incredibly popular, particularly the 88mpg 1.5 dCi engine.

About Renault Clio

One of the most popular cars in Europe, the Renault Clio has been held in consistently high esteem over its twenty year history. Now in its fourth generation, there are no signs that its popularity is set to decline.

The first Clio was introduced in 1990, and since then its mix of good performance, reliability and affordability has made it one of the leading superminis on the roads. Other than the Volkswagen Golf it is the only car to have won the European Car of the Year award twice (1991 and 2006), and today maintains its position as a car for all motorists.

Why buy a used Clio?

Renaults are considered to be excellent all-rounders, and the Clio is no exception. They offer a mix of superior drive, reliable engines and an excellent safety rating, and so it's easy to see why the Clio has remained such a popular choice among all drivers.

Undeniably a large factor in its success is the fact that it is a car which is very economical to run. Many of the most recent generation models feature stop/start technology as standard, while the 1.5 dCi returns an impressive 83.1mpg and emits just 93g/km, qualifying it as road tax exempt. The one exception is the third generation 1.6 petrol Clio, but other than this the full range is economic to run as well as maintain.

Inside, the Clio is roomy and boasts a good economy of space, which allows for four adults to travel in comfortably. There is little over-complication on the dashboard, and so this leaves it clean and functional while still being stylish. Luggage space is good while not being market leading, but this is a small compromise, as it still offers enough space to make it a very practical car.

The ride quality is good in the Clio, offering straightforward handling, good power and a bit more life than a number of its competitors. While there have been some concerns in the steering department for some models, the overall drive experience is one of the best in the supermini class.

As with the rest of the Renault range, the Clio is a top performer in the safety category, and most models have been awarded with the full five star rating by the Euro NCAP crash testing rating. Offering above average performance in nearly every aspect, the Clio is a versatile, practical and exciting car, and so is easily suited to drivers of all ages and temperaments.

Along with the Volkswagen Polo, the Renault Clio is the only car to have won the European Car of the Year award twice.

Here's a brief overview of the Clio's history, starting at the 1990 Paris Motor Show.

The first Renault Clio was launched in 1990 at the Paris Motor Show and quickly found success with both critics and drivers.
The following year it won the first of its two European Car of the Year awards, while a minor redesign saw the chassis develop a smoother shape.
Renault launched the limited edition Clio Williams in 1993 to celebrate their Formula 1 involvement. The cars proved to be incredibly popular and demand far outweighed the number available.
The Renault Clio became one of Europe's fastest selling cars, and one of the first ever Renaults to be consistently included in the UK's top 10 best selling cars.
The second generation Clio was launched in 1998, boasting the more rounded shape now associated with the car.
In 2001 the Clios underwent another facelift, including more angular headlights as well as a more powerful engine.
At the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show a third generation of Clio was unveiled to immediate success. Being bigger in size and with a more premium feel, the Clio won the European Car of the Year award for the second time.
The fourth generation of Clio was launched in 2013, taking on a sleeker design and offering buyers a number of personalisation options.

What should I look for when buying a used Clio?

Take a walk around the vehicle to check for any visible signs of wear and tear, including rust and any poorly finished repair work.
One of the most commonly found (and expensive) problems with Clios has been automatic gearboxes failing, so make sure you check that it works without error on your test drive, and that there is an up to date and well documented service history.
Brake and suspension problems have also been known to arise. Check the suspension by pushing down on the bumper to see how many times it bounces up (any more than two is cause for concern). To check the brakes, lightly hold the wheel while stopping to see if the car pulls to either side (which would mean that one side is failing).
A number of Renault Clio IIs were recalled due to faulty bonnet mechanisms which caused the bonnet to unlatch at high speeds, often smashing the windscreen. If you are looking at a Clio II make sure there is evidence that this recall work has been done, or you could risk a nasty surprise.
Check the electrics are in order by checking that any electric windows, headlights and radios are working as they should be.
Clios are generally thought of as reliable cars, but if you keep a look out for signs of poor upkeep - such as broken or shoddy items inside the car - it will give you a better idea of how the rest of the car has been treated by its past owner.
