Expert Opinion

There are few cars as hard-wearing, rugged and versatile as the Land Rover Discovery. First launched in 1988, it is a stalwart of the large SUV/4X4 market, offering on one hand first rate off-road handling with a full selection of Terrain Response settings; and on the other a smooth and spacious ride perfect for the school run. They don't come cheap, but with so much on offer its hard not to be won over by the Discovery's rugged yet refined nature.

About Land Rover Discovery

Originally intended as a more utilitarian family car, the Discovery first arrived in 1989, and slotted between the agricultural Defender and luxurious Range Rover. Over the years, it’s headed further upmarket, with an interior that’s not far off the standards of the Range Rover.

It’s Land Rover’s ultimate family car, though, with a vast interior that makes it perfect for whatever life has to throw at it. The latest generation gets all of the bells and whistles you could want, too.

Why buy a used Discovery?

If you want a large family car, it’s safe to say they don’t come much better than the Discovery. Let’s start with just how roomy it is. All of the newer Discovery models come with seven full-size seats, and unlike some rivals, the two rearmost seats are still suitable for adults, while access is easy too thanks to clever flip-up chairs.

Even once seven seats are upright, there’s still a similar amount of boot space as what you get in a small hatchback, while with five seats in place there’s a huge 1,137 litres to play with. It really is vast and is cleverly engineered so that you can make the most of that room.

The rest of the interior is also fantastic, and has an especially premium feel and look to it. The likes of electric, heated leather seats are now standard fit, while the technology is top-notch too, with an 11.4-inch touchscreen fitted as standard, along with a fantastic set of digital dials.

It’s also just as composed on tarmac as it is far off the beaten track. Often the best off-roaders – such as the Toyota Land Cruiser and Jeep Wrangler – can be quite compromised on the road, but that’s not the case with the Discovery, as it remains comfortable and very refined. There’s also a superb range of petrol and diesel engines available, with the flagship P360 offering some particularly strong performance, as 0-60mph takes just six seconds.

Though prices for the Discovery have jumped in recent years, it’s also worth considering just how much equipment you get for your money. Even the standard ‘S’ model comes with LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels and heated electric leather seats to name just a few features. Safety kit like a 3D surround camera, adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring are all included too.

Discovery updates

Here’s a short history of the Land Rover Discovery, which dates back to the late ‘80s.

Land Rover was doing well with its Defender and Range Rover, but noticed a gap for a model between – something the Discovery filled in 1989. Initially sold as a three-door, demand quickly materialised for a more practical five-door option.
The second-generation Discovery arrived in 1998 and moved to a five-door-only layout. Styling changes were relatively small, but there were numerous revisions under the surface.
For the third-generation Discovery in 2004, it was thoroughly reinvented, being modernised, growing in size and being fitted with a seriously advanced all-terrain system.
The Discovery 4 arrived in 2009, though was really more of a facelift. A new grille, greater technology and refreshed engines were the main changes.
In 2016, the fifth take of the Discovery was launched. It took a further step upmarket, while being even better off-road and roomier too. It was revised in 2021, gaining a slightly tweaked design, more technology and mild-hybrid engines for the first time.

What should I look for when buying a used Discovery?

Some Discovery models lead a much tougher life than others, so have a good look underneath for any signs of off-road bumpers or scuffed lower trim.
So to not intrude on boot space, the spare wheel is actually positioned under the car, and can be quite easy to steal, so check it’s still there.
Diesel models can suffer from contaminated oil, which means they might need servicing quite regularly – a costly process.
Some owners complain of vibrations at higher speed, which occur when a drivetrain is out of balance. If possible, try and take an example on a 70mph stretch of road on a test drive.
