Expert Opinion

The Ford EcoSport is a compact crossover SUV which comes complete with smart engine technology, and as such, it stands out as a practical and efficient family vehicle. It's pleasantly spacious on the inside, but it's fair to say that it doesn't boast as much refinement as other rival SUVs. That being said, you can still find Ford's popular Zetec and Titanium specs which can offer choice in features and conveniences like air-con, Ford SYNC and more. It's the driving performance that really impresses though; within our used Ford EcoSport range there's 1.0-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel options, as well as variants across the older and more recent versions of this car. Both of these options can provide you with a comfortable ride and it also has decent, sharp handling which makes it feel like you're driving something a little smaller. Another reason why these can be a smart choice as a family vehicle is because of the great economy they provide. Even older second-hand petrol models can get over 50mpg, with the diesels potentially offering even higher than this. About Ford EcoSport

With SUVs continuing to rise in popularity across Europe, Ford took the decision to launch the Ecosport to Europe in 2014. It’s a nameplate that had been used in South America since 2003, but wasn’t seen fit to introduce here for another decade. Though the Fiesta-based Ecosport proved popular, it always felt a bit rough around the edges.

A quite significant update was unveiled towards the end of 2017, giving the model more modern styling, new engines and a much-improved touchscreen to try and keep it up-to-date next to rivals.

Why buy a used EcoSport?

Key to the Ford Ecosport’s appeal is the way it looks, with its boxy and chunky looks really helping to give it the rugged styling that many buyers looking for a car in this class appreciate. The more recently introduced Active version shows that especially well, thanks to its black styling kit with extended wheel arches. That said, you can opt for something that looks a little sportier with the ST-Line trim level.

That raised ride height isn’t just useful when it comes to style, though, as it can also really help when it comes to accessibility, as it makes it far easier to get in and out of, and it sits far higher up than a typical hatchback like the Ford Fiesta. Visibility throughout the Ecosport is also excellent, while all but the entry-level Zetec trim also benefit from a reversing camera.

It’s also available with a great range of engine options. If you fancy a petrol, Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol delivers a great balance of performance and efficiency, while if you’d rather a diesel, the 1.5-litre turbodiesel introduced as part of the 2017 update (available with outputs of either 99bhp or 123bhp) is impressive where efficiency is concerned, with Ford claiming it can return more than 50mpg.

You also get plenty for your money with the Ecosport, as not only are prices affordable (it’s good value when bought new, and even more so on the used market) but standard equipment levels are generous too. Depending on the age of car you’re buying, standard equipment includes a touchscreen, cruise control and alloy wheels, while higher-spec trims bring the likes of parking sensors and a reversing camera.

EcoSport updates

Here’s a short history of the Ford Ecosport, since its launch in the mid-2010s.

Ford announced its intentions to bring the new Ecosport to Europe in 2012. At the time, it said it would be introduced ‘within the next 18 months’.
Following the reveal of the European version of the Ecosport at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, it would finally reach showrooms in 2014.
In 2015, an Ecosport ‘S’ model launched, bringing unique black 17-inch alloy wheels, a black roof and additional technology on top.
Just a year after its launch, an updated model was launched, and for the first time you could choose not to have the bulky spare wheel on the back of it. Updated engines were also launched.
In 2017, Ford pulled the wraps off a facelifted model bringing more style thanks to an ST-Line trim level, a new touchscreen and new 1.5-litre diesel engine.
For 2021, a rugged-looking ‘Active’ trim joined the range, following its appearance on the Fiesta and Focus.

Which used EcoSport should I buy?

Four main trim levels have been offered on the Ford Ecosport. Here are the key equipment highlights on each.

What should I look for when buying a used EcoSport?

With the Ecosport often being used as an urban car, look out for any signs of exterior damage, such as door dings and kerbed wheels.
Though not so much a fault, all Ecosports feature a side-hinged boot that opens outwards, rather than upwards. It can be quite inconvenient in small spaces, for example.
Earlier cars use quite low quality of materials, so inspect carefully for any damaged trim.
