About Ford Fiesta

First launched in 1976 with the aim of spicing up Ford's range - using the Spanish word for party as its name in the process - the Fiesta was an all-new model that served as Ford’s smallest car yet. It was an instant hit, with models flowing off the production line at quite a rate, to the point that just three years after production started, a million Fiestas had been produced.

That popularity would continue over the years, with the Fiesta regularly topping the car sales charts, and it is in fact the best-selling car ever in Britain. Its popularity has slightly faltered in recent years, however, as more buyers favour SUVs, including Ford’s own Puma.

Why buy a used Fiesta?

A car's popularity might be seen as a disadvantage by some, but it's really a big advantage, as shown with the Ford Fiesta. For starters, parts are readily available and good value should repairs be needed, while the sheer number of Fiestas on the market means it won't be hard to track one down. The wide variety of versions also adds to the appeal, whether you're looking for a cheap first car or fun hot hatchback, and to suit a variety of budgets too.

Across the years, the Fiesta has always been good fun behind the wheel too, with agile handling, well-weighted steering and pedals equating to a very enjoyable experience. That applies to lower-spec cars too, not just the sporty ST models, though these are particularly fantastic to drive as well. The latest generation has also introduced an Active model, bringing more rugged styling and raised suspension to the Fiesta to appeal to those wanting more of an SUV-like design.

The latest models are also very economical, particularly the new mild-hybrid petrol engines that enhance fuel efficiency further. With up to 56.5mpg claimed, along with CO2 emissions as low as 114g/km, the Fiesta absolutely excels in this respect.

Despite its relatively small dimensions, there’s plenty of space inside the Fiesta too. If practicality is important, it’s worth buying a five-door car, though the rear seats offer plenty of room for adults, and the 292-litre boot is a good size for a vehicle of this type.

Fiesta updates

Here's a short history of the Ford Fiesta, which dates back to 1976.

In celebration of Ford's new small car being built in Spain, the firm elects the Fiesta name. By 1979 the millionth car had already been produced.
A second-generation Fiesta came along in 1983, being more efficient, longer and getting a new 1.3-litre engine.
1989 saw the launch of the third-generation Fiesta, bringing safety improvements and also being the first to be offered with a five-door option.
In 1996 there was the launch of the Mk4 Fiesta, with a more rounded shape and range of new engines available.
In 2002 came the fifth Fiesta, becoming a far more modern-looking car with a much-improved interior.
By 2008 it was time for the sixth generation Fiesta, offering a far smarter design inside and out. A 2012 facelift saw the addition of Ford's new EcoBoost petrol engines.
Fast forward to 2017 and the seventh Fiesta launched. Bringing far more technology, an upgraded design, it would also later gain electrified powertrains a few years later.

What should I look for when buying a used Fiesta?

Be aware of low-mileage diesel examples, as regular short trips can block the filters of these, potentially causing issues down the line.
The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engines could be troublesome in the past, but Ford largely seems to have ironed out any issues. It's worth having an expert checking it over.
The Sync3 touchscreen system can be a bit glitchy, so it's worth making sure all the apps on it work properly, and that you can easily connect your smartphone.
