Expert Opinion

The i10 isn't necessarily much of head turner in terms of looks (at 3.5 metres long its hard enough just to spot it), instead it impresses by being affordable, well-equipped and very reliable. Like its big brother the i30, it is part of a new range of Hyundai produced with the market leaders in their sights. While the i10 might not quite reach that high, its excellent affordability (both to run and to buy, particularly in the Blue model), lively yet refined performance, and agile and exciting city ride makes it one of the top contenders. It might not have the looks for the runway or the brawn to tackle the motorway with any vigour, but as a city runaround which is frugal and fun, it is in its element.

About Hyundai I10

Introduced at a time when Hyundai was enduring some big changes, the i10 was the brand’s new city car, signalling a huge step forward from the outdated Amica it replaced. Only the second model as part of Hyundai’s new ‘i’ range, it offered fresher styling, low running costs and a decent driving experience.

A second-generation model arrived in 2014, building on all of those factors with a more stylish design inside and out, with the latest third-generation i10 hitting showrooms right at the start of 2020, packing a bold new design and class-leading levels of technology.

Why buy a used I10?

One of the top reasons to consider the i10 is for its affordability. Used prices for earlier examples start from as little as £1,500, which still gets you an affordable and reliable runabout for not a lot of money. Even newer examples represent great value for money, while you’ll also benefit from Hyundai’s excellent five-year unlimited-mileage warranty. Just as long as models are under five years old, you’ll benefit from having your car covered for the remainder of that time too.

It’s not just affordable to buy but also to run, with the i10’s small petrol engines also being frugal and light on the pocket. Hyundai claims up to 56.5mpg, while 114g/km on CO2 emissions are excellent for a car that doesn’t feature any kind of electrification. Low insurance groups also make the i10 a very attractive option for new or young drivers, especially after just passing their test.

Another surprising attribute of the i10 is its practicality, as despite measuring under 3.7m in length, its interior is able to rival models from the class above. There’s a seriously impressive amount of rear space for such a small car, which will even allow adults to get comfortable. Unlike rivals like the Volkswagen Up! and Fiat 500, the i10 can also seat five, rather than just four. At 252 litres, the boot is also a very generous size, and will provide space for a few weekend away bags or the weekly shop. If you’re looking to downsize, but still need something relatively roomy, the i10 is a solid choice.

The latest example of the i10 also feels more grown-up than ever, with its refined driving experience (particularly with the more powerful engines) making it suitable for a mixture of driving, and not just urban. There’s also a seriously impressive amount of tech available, with all but the entry-level trim benefiting from an 8-inch touchscreen with reversing camera, while top-spec models get features like a wireless smartphone charging pad and heated front seats.

I10 updates

Here’s a short history of the Hyundai i10, which has been around since 2007.
  • Hyundai revealed its European version of the i10 in December 2007, showing a more modern design inside and outside than the Amica it replaced. The model became one of the most popular cars thanks to the scrappage scheme at the time, allowing drivers to upgrade their old cars to something brand-new with minimal expense.
  • The i10 was updated in 2011, bringing improved, more efficient engines and lightly tweaked styling.
  • Hyundai revealed its second-generation i10 in 2013, offering a far more stylish design and larger size to allow for segment-leading interior space. A range of new technologies and safety kits was offered as well.
  • In 2015, Hyundai launched a high-spec Premium SE trim, bringing features like an electric sunroof and parking sensors.
  • A 2016 update then focused on adding extra safety kit to the i10, new connectivity and a fresher exterior design.
  • A third-generation i10 hit showrooms at the start of 2020, packing a far more modern exterior design, new range of technology and an even roomier cabin.

Which used I10 should I buy?

Here’s a look at the four main trim levels on the i10, with equipment highlights as follows.

Hyundai I10 SE

Air conditioning, 14-inch steel wheels with covers, Bluetooth, cruise control with speed limiter, electric door mirrors, driver attention alert, DAB radio, electric windows, forward collision avoidance, high beam assist, lane keep assist, leather steering wheel.

Hyundai I10 SE Connect

8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear speakers, voice recognition, 15-inch alloy wheels, reversing camera.

Hyundai I10 Premium

16-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, front fog lights, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, privacy glass, wireless charging pad, connected ‘Live’ services, Bluelink telematics.

Hyundai I10 N-Line

16-inch N-Line alloy wheels, two-tone roof, sportier interior, N-Line styling kit, LED rear lights.

What should I look for when buying a used I10?

  • As the i10 is predominantly an urban car, look out for any parking damage and dents in doors, as they might be more common.
  • Some cars suffer from a temperamental air-con system, so check the air blows cold while inspecting used cars.
  • Clutch can begin to slip early, so look out for any difficulty when changing gears and a spongy or sticking clutch pedal.
