About Hyundai I20

Revealed in 2008, the i20 was one of Hyundai's first 'i' models as part of a major rebrand from the firm. Replacing the budget Getz, this new model was a significant step forward, and proved a popular choice with buyers, not least because of the fact it was still very good value.

Moving forward to 2015, the i20 advanced further, becoming a key player in the competitive supermini segment, with its more practical interior, modern design and generous equipment levels all making it stand out. Fast forward to 2020 and Hyundai's third generation was launched, showing a new design direction for the firm, along with much-improved levels of technology.

Why buy a used I20?

Though the i20 might not be as cheap as it once was, prices have risen in-line with the model's progression, and it remains great value to this day. Even just a look at the standard equipment list shows this, with the latest model coming with an eight-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster and a reversing camera as a minimum. If you're looking at a newer i20, it might still be covered by Hyundai's fantastic five-year warranty, which doesn't have a mileage limit - worth remembering if you do plenty of miles.

The i20 is also a very practical choice by class standards, offering a similar level of interior space to what you might expect from larger models. Even six-foot-tall adults will be able to sit in relative comfort in the rear seats, with legroom being particularly impressive. The 262-litre boot isn't the largest because of the space taken up by the mild-hybrid system, but it's still a respectable size for a small car.

Another strength of the i20 is its mild-hybrid petrol engines. Centred around a turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine, which is offered with either 99bhp or 118bhp, they bring decent performance, but even better efficiency. Hyundai claims up to 55.3mpg, while CO2 emissions of 116g/km are excellent too, and should mean that the i20 doesn't cost much to run at all. Even the slightly sportier N-Line model, which gets a sports exhaust and more aggressive bodykit, can comfortably return 50mpg in day-to-day driving.

Here's a short history of the Hyundai i20, which dates back to 2008.

Hyundai revealed the i20 as its new supermini in 2008, replacing the ageing Getz and proving a significant step forward.
A year later the i20 range expanded to include a sportier-looking three-door version.
The i20 was updated in 2012, gaining more efficient engines and a redesigned look.
The second-generation i20 was introduced in 2015, bringing a far more modern design, class-leading interior space and new turbocharged petrol engines. A more striking Coupe model was launched later in the year.
A 2018 update to the i20 saw it receive a modern redesign, gaining more driver assistance features and a dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Hyundai's third-generation i20 arrived in 2020, bringing a stunning design, impressive levels of technology and mild-hybrid technology across the line-up. An N hot hatch model arrived a year later.
