Expert Opinion

Although it is undeniably a car with a distinctly youthful, playful edge, the SEAT Ibiza is a more mature and practical car than one might think. In the 1.2 TDi Ecomotive - the star of the latest, fourth generation - which returns 80mpg and emits 92g/km CO2, its efficiency is as competitive as any other supermini in its class, while its ride and handling favours stability and comfort more than it does sport (a hot hatch Cupra version ticks this box). With a unique, idiosyncratic style running through the full range however, the Ibiza is a car which has got plenty of play to match its practicality.

Having gone through the first part of its life as an affordable supermini which offers little other than a vaguely youthful design and the chance for you to keep a few extra pennies in your pocket, the Seat Ibiza is now a car with serious aspirations.

Boasting good economy, nimble, responsive handling, and a refined and comfortable ride, it might not yet be market leading, but it is certainly edging closer all the time.

Why buy a used Ibiza?

The leading model in the Seat range, the Ibiza epitomises the fun, efficiency and comfort of the Spanish manufacturer. First launched in 1984, it has come a long way from the inexpensive and functional car that it was when it was first released. Although still with a distinct emphasis on affordability, it is now a more refined and sophisticated vehicle.

Ibizas have always been some of the most stylish designed cars on the road, and in the latest generation this is taken a step further, refining the lines to make them cleaner and sharper, producing an altogether more chic car. This maturity is continued inside, where both fit and finish are focused on quality, while space it particularly good in the cabin. But being four metres long, this is to be expected.

Efficiency in this model also follows the pattern of vast improvement, particularly in engines fitted with Ecomotive technology. Official figures cite 80mpg returns and 92g/km CO2 emissions in the 1.2 TDI Ecomotive model, which makes it an incredibly affordable car. Understandably this comes at the price of performance, but opt for the 1.6 TDI, and this is improved while efficiency is not radically dented.

Very early Ibizas tend to have the reputation of being well-built but a bit dull to drive, but from the second generation they have grown steadily more exciting. The fourth generation - the most recent - continues this trend, but also radically improves the ride, refining it to make it far more mature whether driving cross country or just in the city.

While this might take away some of the dynamism that once categorised the Ibiza (such as found in the third generation car), it places it as a far more sophisticated vehicle which offers drivers more than just cheap and cheerful. Its not short of competition, but it is stylish, stable, and with enough energy to make it both a functional and fun.

The Seat Ibiza was launched in 1984, and despite facing very stiff competition in its class, has found itself as one of the most popular superminis available.

Here's a short history of the Seat Ibiza, starting in 1984 at the Paris Motor Show.

The first Seat Ibiza was launched in 1984 at the Paris Motor Show. This first generation car was hugely successful and went on to sell over 1 million units.
The second generation Ibiza (Mk2), was launched in 1992 and was based on the Volkswagen Group A03 platform.
A second Volkswagen-produced Ibiza was introduced in 1999, which was known in the UK as the Mk3, but was largely a facelift of the previous MK2. This included a revised front and back end and new styling cues.
Seat re-entered the World Rally Championship in 1995 after an 18 year gap with the Ibiza 1.8 16v, and in 1996 won the FIA 2 litre championship with the Seat Ibiza Kit Car.
In 2002 the third generation of Ibiza was introduced, and was designed to have a sportier and more dynamic edge than its predecessors.
The Ibiza was named Car of the Year in 2003 by What Car? Magazine.
A new generation of Ibiza was unveiled at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, which featured an entirely new design language - abandoning the one used since 1984.

What should I look for when buying a used Ibiza?

Some Ibizas have reported problems with the central locking systems, so make sure to check that this is working properly - if not it could be a problem with the activator.
In some Ibizas the rear window washer can leak into the car (caused by the hose becoming detached). Check to see that there are no signs of damp in the boot, which would indicate this to be the case.
Check that the paperwork to ensure that the cam belt has been changed after regular intervals. On the Ibiza it is recommended to do this within 60,000 miles.
When running, listen to the engine for any misfires or spluttering, which could mean that the spark plug leads are faulty and need replacing.
Out on a test drive, check that the car doesn't suddenly lose power when accelerating or when it reaches a high speed. If this is the case it could mean that the air mass meter needs replacing.
Listen for any noises coming from the suspension when driving over bumps. A creaking noise in particular could mean that the roll bar bushes needs to be replaced.
