Expert Opinion

The L200 has been a key player in the pick-up market for more than four decades. Whether it lands in the hands of a builder or a family, it's always got on with the job in question and will strike a chord with those that like to tow, with the latest versions able to tow a braked trailer weighing up to 3.5 tonnes. Renowned for its reliability, the most recent models also use a new 2.3-litre diesel engine, offering plenty of pace and class-leading efficiency. It's just a shame Mitsubishi left the UK market in 2021 as it instead looks to focus on other parts of the globe.

Mitsubishi is well-known for its 4x4s, and the L200 has been one of the firm's longest-running products. First debuting in 1978, it's been known by a number of names in other markets, including the Forte and Triton. Arriving as a reliable and low-cost pick-up, those are two traits the L200 has clung to over the years.

A number of generations have followed, with the more practical Double Cab version launching in 1998 with the Series 3 model. Though the L200 went through a stage in the 2000s when it adopted softer styling, the more recent models have become bolder and more muscular in terms of their design.

Why buy a used L200?

The L200 is a very utilitarian choice that makes it a good option for those using their pick-up as a working vehicle. A full-time four-wheel-drive system is included on all versions, as is a locking rear differential, and it makes it ideal for those using their vehicle to go off-road.

Despite its rugged focus, however, it's one of the best pick-ups to use on the road, with more of an SUV-like feel behind the wheel, rather than a working truck. At motorway speeds, it's impressively refined, while the reworked suspension means it's a comfortable choice as well. The latest 2.3-litre diesel engine is a great choice too and is among one of the most efficient on the markets - returning a claimed 32.8mpg, but you can expect more than this on longer motorway runs.

The level of standard equipment on the L200 is also seriously impressive, with all Double Cab models getting cruise control, alloy wheels, cruise control and air conditioning. As you venture to the top of the line-up, the level of equipment is seriously impressive, with quilted leather seats, blind spot monitoring and a 360-degree camera included on top-spec Barbarian X versions.

Here's a short history of the Mitsubishi L200, which dates back to 1978.

Mitsubishi joined the pick-up market in 1978, with a model that was first called the Forte in Japan but renamed L200 for European markets.
A second-generation L200 arrived in 1986, gaining a more imposing design and building on its predecessor's impressive reliability and value.
In 1996 the third L200 was introduced, featuring a more modern look and higher quality interior. A Double Cab version was launched in 1998.
The L200 really gained popularity with the fourth generation, arriving in 2016. With a more rounded design, it boasted impressive strength for towing.
The L200 Series 5 arrived in late 2015, gaining a more imposing design, more modern technology and a new 2.4-litre diesel engine. It was also rebadged as the Fiat Fullback for several years.
The L200 was last revised in 2019, gaining a far bolder design, enhanced quality and comfort. Mitsubishi stopped selling new cars in the UK in 2021, meaning the L200 was axed at the same time.

What should I look for when buying a used L200?

As with any pick-up, have a good look underneath for any signs of damage from off-roading, particularly around the chassis.

The L200 doesn't have the most upmarket interior, so look out for any damaged interior trim on well-used models.
