Each successive generation has strengthened the Mondeo's position in the incredibly competitive large family car sector. The third generation's modern facelift, quieter engine, excellent handing, stability control, security, safety and large range of engines means finding your perfect used Mondeo is relatively simple. The Mondeo has always tended to a more conservative design, which arguably puts those looking for something in the premium market off. But the interior of the Mondeo's more recent generation cars have proved to be sleek and practical, while the full range crucially offers up a wealth of space. The Ford Mondeo estate Mk IV offers over 500 litres of boot space, a figure which increases to around 1,600 litres once the rear seats are laid flat.

In its class, the performance and ride of the Mondeo has been consistently unmatched. Steering has remained responsive and direct across the range, and its handling rates as some of the best available on a front wheel drive. Coupled with a smooth suspension, the Mondeo makes for a comfortable drive that is versatile enough to satisfy the needs of a family or a thrill seeker.

With a wide range of engines, there are a number of performance options to choose from. Diesel engines have proved to be the most popular, in particular the 2 litre, 138bhp Mk VI Mondeo, which is an all-rounder that matches refinement with superior performance. Of course, there are options which push performance both ways, such as the 237bhp Ecoboost petrol engine,offering an impressive top speed of 153mph and a 0-62mph time of just 7.5 seconds. Despite its power, this model does remain relatively economic, returning 36.7mpg, and comes fitted with a clever stop/start system.

For the more economically minded the 114bhp TDCi with Eco trim returns a far more impressive 65.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 112g/km, which makes the spacious and practical Mondeo also an economic one to run. Upkeep costs are low, and while Mondeos sit towards the higher end of the pricing scale, they lose value relatively quickly, making them an ideal used buy.

The Ford Mondeo has been one of the leading cars in its class since it was first introduced 20 years ago.

Here's a brief overview of the Ford Mondeo's history, starting back in 1993.

The first Ford Mondeo was launched in 1993, and was initially available as a four door saloon, a five door hatchback and a five door estate.
Sales were very good from the beginning, and in 1994 the Mondeo was named European Car of the Year.
The Ford Mondeo Mk II was launched in 1996, and featured a heavily revised look as well as a better performing, more efficient engine.
Proving to be instantly successful, the Mondeo Mk II was Britain's third best selling car for three consecutive years in 1996, 1997 and 1998, with Tony Blair buying one in 1997.
The considerably larger Ford Mondeo III was launched in 2000, and was considered a more restrained and mature car than its predecessor.
From 2001 onwards the Mondeo has consistently ranked as Britain's most popular car in its class. In 2001 it was the sixth best selling car in the UK across all classes.
In 2007 the fourth generation Mondeo was launched, and for one scene is the car used by James Bond in the film Casino Royale.

What should I look for when buying a used Mondeo?

Make sure to conduct a full exterior check of the vehicle before buying, looking for rust and corrosion - especially at the base of doors.
When taking it out for a test drive check the rear subframe mounting bushes by listening for noises when driving over road bumps. If you hear any metal on metal squeaks its likely that these will be on their last legs and will need replacing.
The Mondeo Mk III has been known to present some handbrake problems (such as not keeping the car stationary when in use). Check that this is in working order by leaving it on when parked and pushing it to see if the car moves.
Electrical problems are responsible for a number of reported faults in Mondeos, so check any radio, electric windows or air conditioning systems are working properly to see if this is up to scratch.
Check the rear brake pipes at the point they cross over the fuel tank, as these can sometimes corrode on Mondeos, and subsequently lead to a failed MOT.
With a good service history and an owner who has clearly looked after their vehicle, you can be sure to walk away with a Mondeo that is reliable and will serve you for a good number of years.
