Expert Opinion

Gone are the days when a pick-up was just used as a workhorse around farms and building sites - these vehicles have to be able to do it all. The Nissan Navara does just that and is a superb all-rounder in what is quite a competitive segment. Its car-like suspension means it doesn’t feel as agricultural on the road as many trucks, and while its 2.3-litre diesel engine might not sound all that capable it's more than up to the task and delivers impressive efficiency figures too. From basic trim levels to top-spec 'lifestyle' orientated models that come with all the bells and whistles, the Navara will appeal to many.

About Nissan Navara

Nissan has a long history of producing pick-ups, but it wasn’t until 1997 that the Navara first arrived in Europe. It's worth noting other pick-ups using this nameplate had been sold previously in other corners of the world. It proved popular from the outset, rivalling models like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.

The second-generation Navara was somewhat softened to suit a wider audience, though it didn't lose any capability in the process. However, it was the third-generation version that really impressed. Receiving further tweaks to make it more suitable for use on the road, it boasted class-leading fuel economy and impressive levels of technology for a truck. It would continue on sale until 2021 when Nissan took the decision to discontinue it. A year later, production stopped at Nissan's Barcelona factory.

Why buy a used Navara?

If you're doing plenty of miles on the road and want a pick-up, the Nissan Navara is a great option as it offers a particularly car-like feel behind the wheel. With suspension tuned carefully for tarmac, it doesn't feel as agricultural or coarse to drive as many other models in this class and is particularly good at bridging the gap between a working and lifestyle vehicle.

However, don’t think that this doesn't make it suitable if you're still looking for a working truck, as the Navara is more than up to the task. Its pick-up bed offers a payload of a tonne, while those looking to tow a heavier trailer, horsebox or caravan will be impressed by the fact it has a 3.5-tonne towing capacity.

The 2.3-litre diesel engine (used on all third-generation Navaras) also has plenty of torque and means it never feels stretched while towing, while the other advantage to this engine is its efficiency. In fact, it boasts class-leading fuel economy, with Nissan claiming 40.4mpg, while CO2 emissions of 184g/km aren’t bad at all for a vehicle of this type.

There are plenty of trim and bodystyle choices too, depending on your needs. If you want a no-frills option, the value-packed Visia ticks the right boxes, but if you want a plusher truck, top-spec Tekna and N-Guard models are very well equipped, with elements like heated front seats, a 360-degree system and leather upholstery.

Navara updates

Here's a short history of the Nissan Navara, which dates back to 1997.

The first Nissan Navara to arrive in Europe was revealed in 1997, being a more compact pick-up that worked well here.
A second-generation Navara was introduced in 2005, being bolder, more comfortable and offering additional space compared to its predecessor.
The Navara was revised in 2010, gaining a new V6 diesel engine, revised styling and a higher-quality interior.
The third-generation Navara debuted in 2015, featuring a new 2.3-litre diesel offering much lower running costs, impressive levels of technology and a far more stylish design.
Changes made included the addition of a more muscular top-spec N-Guard version in 2018, while a 2019 update gave the Navara a new touchscreen system and enhanced capability thanks to upgraded suspension.
The Navara was discontinued in the UK in 2021.

What should I look for when buying a used Navara?

As with all pick-ups, look out for any signs of damage to the underside from off-roading. Look out for corrosion too, while worryingly some second-generation Navara models could suffer from a cracked chassis that could snap the bed of the truck off in extreme circumstances.
Make sure the spare wheel for the Navara is present and correct, it can be found underneath the truck bed.
