If there's a single car which can claim to be responsible for the changing reputation of Skoda over the last few years, it's the Octavia. With a 560 litre boot in the saloon, a range of VW Group engines under the bonnet and a sophisticated design, it gives its rivals a real run for their money; especially considering the Octavia's meagre price tag. Engine and trim levels range, but opt for the 1.8 litre petrol and you'll cruise along with the best of them, while a frugal diesel will keep run costs low.

About Skoda Octavia

Skoda revived the Octavia nameplate in the late 1990s for a new large practical model that was the result of the brand’s collaboration with Volkswagen. Renowned for its huge boot and roomy shape, it was an instant hit for the brand, with an Estate model continuing its success.

Second- and third-generation models would follow in 2004 and 2012 respectively, while sporty VRS versions have been offered on every model so far. The most recent Octavia arrived in 2020, bringing with it a new digitised interior and electrified powertrains for the first time.

Why buy a used Octavia?

One of the many highlights of the Octavia is its vast interior. Thanks to the elongated hatchback shape, it’s by far the roomiest car in its segment, and far more practical than a conventional model in this class, such as the Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus. Those two cars, for example, offer 370 litres of boot space, but with the Octavia you get an enormous 600-litre boot. It’s so big in fact that you’ll struggle to reach items at the back of the trunk without having to climb in.

Rear seat space is equally impressive, with loads of headroom and legroom ensuring most adults will be able to get comfortable. You’re also able to choose the Estate version if you fancy something even more practical.

Yet, despite its size, the Octavia is almost identical in price to others in this class, representing fantastic value on the new market, and especially when buying used. It really is a very savvy choice for those wanting to get the most for their money.

But this low price isn’t at the expense of how the model looks or its quality, as with its sleek shape, it offers the classy looks you’d usually associate with far more expensive and premium models. Inside, the fit and finish is excellent, too – particularly on the latest cars, which also get modern touches like a large touchscreen system and digital dials.

Also key to the Octavia is its driving experience. Though it’s not as sporty to drive as rivals – though you can correct that by choosing the vRS model – it prioritises comfort and refinement over anything else, and that’s where it truly excels. If you want a car for longer trips or if you spend a lot of time commuting, there really aren’t many better cars available at this price.

Here’s a brief history of the Skoda Octavia, since it was revived in 1996.

Skoda revived the Octavia name (it was previously used in the 1950s and ‘60s) for a new large hatchback in 1996. It would reach the UK in 1998
In 2001, Skoda introduced the vRS – a sporty hot hatch that got more aggressive styling and the same engine from the Volkswagen Golf GTI.
A second-generation Octavia was launched in 2004, featuring more modern styling, additional interior space and new innovations like dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. It was revised in 2008, gaining more interior creature comforts and new 1.4- and 1.8-litre TSI petrol engines.
Skoda introduced the third-generation Octavia in 2013, with this getting a more elegant and modern design, as well as the likes of a touchscreen as standard. It was revised in 2017, gaining an improved media system and new driver aids as well as a dual-light setup at the front.
By 2020, the fourth-generation Octavia was launched. Bringing a more coupe-like shape than before, a digitalised interior and both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options.
