Capitalising somewhat on the success of their Golf, Volkswagen took the recipe of cost-effective, reliable motoring and a sprinkling of street style and chucked it at the Family Car Market - the result is the Passat. Now in its thirtieth year and sixth generation, the Passat has followed a similarly ergonomic design path as its little brother and like the Golf, it's got a reputation for driveability and intelligent use of internal space. If you're looking for a car to retain its value for resale, consider the Passat - a car that combines respectable numbers across fuel efficiency and CO2 with respectability in the office car park. Internally, there's plenty of extras to choose from, too. Keep an eye out for the 2011 Passat Alltrack if you're looking something a little more SUV.

About Volkswagen Passat

Now in its sixth generation and its fourth decade of production, the VW Passat is a mainstay of the large family car market. With good reliability and a comfortable ride, it remains one of the most popular cars in its class.

Along with the fact that the Passat is more economical than many of its closest rivals (the Ford Mondeo and the Skoda Superb), it's easy to understand why it is a consistently good seller in the large family car class.

Why buy a used Passat?

Of the cars in its class, the Passat may be one of the most practical. A mix of reliability, space, affordability and comfort, it has all the elements of a good family car.

If there was to be a main criticism, it's that the Passat doesn't offer the same lively drive that some of its competitors do. This is a minor niggle however, as the ride is comfortable, performance options are good, and it comes well equipped - particularly in the newer generations which come with alloy wheels, air conditioning, USB connectivity and electric windows.

The drive is one of the most comfortable on the market, and in the newer models - which feature a revised suspension - the ride is as smooth and assured on poor roads as it is on motorways. Even at top speeds it remains responsive and calm.

The range of engines on offer is vast, and there are both diesel and petrol options; though the former offer the best mix of power and economy. The 2.0 litre diesel 138bhp achieves 0-60mph in around 10 seconds, but surprisingly returns just 50mpg and CO2 emissions of 120g/km. More efficient is the 1.6 diesel, which returns a more impressive 65mpg. The 1.4TSI petrol with Bluemotion technology offers around 47mpg and emissions of 138g/km, making it one of the most efficient cars in its class.

Reliability on VWs is good and the Passat is no exception; it scored an above average reliability rating in the 2012 JD Power survey. This reputation and rating extends to the safety as well, and so the Passat holds the full five star Euro NCAP crash test rating, while all modern models come with special electronic accident avoidance aids.

With low running and upkeep costs, the Passat is a solid family car which retains its value very well. Already competitively priced for their class, their potential resale value is very good.

First introduced in 1973, the Volkswagen Passat has been a consistent performer in the family car market.

Here's a brief history of the VW Passat, starting with its launch in 1973.

Along with the Golf, the first Passat was part of a new generation for Volkswagen which featured front wheel drive and water-cooled engines, and was launched in 1973.
The second generation Passat was launched in 1981 and featured a roomier and more sleek design than its predecessor. In 1985 the range was given a redesign which included larger bumpers and a new grille.
In 1987 the third generation Passat was launched, and continued its run as one of the most popular family cars on the market.
1990 saw the 5,000,000th Passat produced.
The B4 Passat was introduced in 1993, but was more of a facelift than an actual new model. Interior equipment and safety functions were the main aspects to be improved.
In 1997 a fifth generation of Passat was introduced, this time featuring independent front suspension and the option of four wheel drive.
In 2001 the B5 Passat received a facelift, and later that year is named What Car? magazine's Used Car of the Year.
2005 saw the sixth generation of Passat unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. The new model featured a radical redesign making the car more rounded and chic.
A redesigned Passat was introduced in 2010, and in 2012 the car was named best used car in both the estate and small family car categories by What Car? magazine.

What should I look for when buying a used Passat?

Walk around the vehicle, checking for an noticeable problems such as rust or dodgy repair work, which could indicate that the car has been in an accident.
The Passat interior is of a high quality, but there is still a chance that this could suffer from wear and tear. Have a look for any rips or tears on upholstery, or shoddy renovation work.
Check all electrical systems such as radios, air conditioning and windows are working. Any problems with these could lead to bigger electrical faults in the long run.
Passats generally need to be topped up with oil fairly regularly - especially diesel engines - so make sure that you check that this has been done. If it hasn't there will likely be tell tale signs such as blue smoke coming from the exhaust.
While on the road, listen for any knocking or unusual noises coming from the car when travelling over speed bumps. This would most likely mean suspension problems.
Some models have had steering problems, so when taking it out for a test drive make sure to give the steering system a proper check. If it doesn't feel even and consistent, or if it generates any unusual noises, it could be a cause for concern.
Volkswagen is a brand well known for its reliability, so with a few careful checks on these faults, you can be sure to drive away with a bargain.
