Expert Opinion

Slightly smaller and perhaps a touch less practical than the full-sized Range Rover, the Sport is, like its name suggests, a lithe, adventurous car offering both power and practicality. Although not particularly varied, the choice of engines - two 3 litre diesels or a 5 litre supercharged petrol - are understandably hefty, while it has a considered ride and handling that makes it rugged and brisk off road, yet refined and smooth - much like a large saloon - on it. Cars in this class are never going to be the most frugal and the Sport is no exception, but offering both the versatile needs of a family and the excitement and brawn of a seasoned off roader, it is practical, powerful and polished.

Still one of the ultimate luxury 4x4s, the Range Rover remains a British icon and a hit with those looking for an upmarket off-roader. But in the early 2000s, there was an acknowledgment from Land Rover that some customers wanted something a little sportier and more involving to drive.

The result was the Range Rover Sport – a model that carried nearly all the luxury of the main Range Rover, but was more enjoyable behind the wheel, while slightly smaller and a little bit more affordable as well. A second-generation arrived in 2013, while in more recent years Land Rover has given it a more modern facelift, while introducing plug-in hybrid options to the line-up as well.

Why buy a used Range Rover Sport?

For starters, don’t go thinking this is a sub-par Range Rover because this isn’t the full-sized model, as that’s far from the truth. Both in terms of the immediately-recognisable styling to the impressively upmarket interior, this is a model truly deserving of its nameplate, and more than capable of competing in the luxury SUV segment.

Let’s delve a bit deeper into its interior, which offers sublime quality thanks to soft leather seats with neat stitching, while a range of interior inlays – from wood to aluminium to carbon – help to give the Sport’s cabin a very upmarket feel. The latest versions are also laden with technology, getting a digital instrument cluster to go alongside a twin touchscreen system. The top screen looks after the typical infotainment and navigation services, with the lower media system looking after the climate controls and heated seats. It certainly helps this Range Rover to feel modern inside.

The key reason for choosing the Sport over the regular Range Rover is for the way it drives, though. As it sits a bit lower to the floor, it feels more agile than the standard car and certainly has a more dynamic edge. This isn’t at the expense of other areas, though, as the Sport is still impressively comfortable and refined – helped by adaptive air suspension that’s fitted as standard.

If you’re happy to push the boat out, the SVR model sits at the top of the range. Coming from Jaguar Land Rover’s ‘Special Vehicle’ team, it features a monstrous 567bhp 5.0-litre V8 engine under the bonnet and is able to accelerate in ways that could almost embarrass some supercars. Accompanied by a very raucous exhaust system, it really is a very special thing if you want the best of the best.

Though affordability might not be a top priority on a Range Rover, it’s useful to know just how much cheaper the Sport is to buy – it’s most noticeable when new, as this model’s £64,485 starting price is nearly £20,000 cheaper than the standard version.

So if you want an upmarket 4x4 that’s also good to drive, the Range Rover Sport should be high up your priority list.

Range Rover Sport updates

Here’s a brief look at the Range Rover Sport, since its debut in 2005.

First teased by the 2004 ‘Range Stormer’ concept car, it previewed a sportier model that would become the ‘Sport’ a year later. Rather than being based on the Range Rover, it was actually adapted from the Discovery at the time.
Land Rover revised the Sport in 2009, with the updated model getting modern styling inside and out, as well as a new flagship V8 engine option.
Land Rover revealed a thoroughly reworked second-generation model in 2013, gaining styling cues from the Range Rover Evoque, along with a new aluminium chassis and enhanced off-roading system.
A sporty SVR model was introduced in 2015 to appeal to those wanting to take this Range Rover’s dynamic capabilities further.
The Sport was revised in 2018, gaining a new twin touchscreen system, tweaked styling and the option of a new plug-in hybrid model that allows for around 30 miles of electric driving.

What should I look for when buying a used Range Rover Sport?

Gloss black pillars are very prone to being scratched.
Many of the model’s problems stem from the infotainment system, so check everything works as it should.
Leaks can stem from the roof and tailgate, so check for any water ingress around the cabin.
Suspension can be troublesome and expensive to fix, so check the car can lower and raise as it should, without any loud noises, and be wary if you can hear any clunks as it changes height.
