About Toyota RAV4

First conceived by Toyota's development team in 1986, the RAV4 didn't actually arrive in production-ready form until 1994. Debuting in three-door form, it arrived using a range of parts from the firm's other models - including the Corolla, Carina and even Toyota's sporty Celica GT-Four. A four-door version arrived a couple of years later, with this model being key to the model's growth.

The preceding generations continued to grow in size, while front-wheel-drive models followed, bringing lower running costs for customers. In 2016 Toyota even introduced a hybrid model, ahead of the latest 2019 generation version being offered solely with electrified powertrains.

Why buy a used RAV4?

If reliability and dependability are top priorities when purchasing a new car, the Toyota RAV4 is an impressively appealing choice. Over the years, it's proven impressively fault-free for many owners, just as long as it's well-maintained. Even the latest RAV4 versions equipped with hybrid setups are just as reliable, and well worth considering if you're moving from a car that hasn't always been reliable. All RAV4s also have a particularly solid feel in the interior. Though perhaps not as 'premium' as other rivals, there's a real feeling that they're built to last.

The latest generation of RAV4 with its hybrid system is also fantastic on fuel, offering diesel-beating levels of efficiency, and it's an ideal choice for those wanting to reduce their bills, but without having to downsize. Toyota's hybrid systems are some of the best around, with a claimed fuel economy figure of 50mpg, and CO2 emissions as low as 126g/km are fantastic for a mid-size SUV.

Those wanting a plug-in option can also choose the recently-launched RAV4 PHEV. Offering an impressive 302bhp, it's particularly quick at getting up to speed, while a class-leading electric range of 46 miles brings scope for some exceptionally low running costs.

Though not offered with seven seats like some of its rivals are, if you don't need that third row of seats, it's hard to beat the RAV4 for spaciousness. Particularly the latest generation, which offers loads of rear seat space for passengers, while at 580 litres, the boot is a fantastic size, and increases to 1,690 litres once the rear seats are folded.

RAV4 updates

Here's a short history of the Toyota RAV4, which dates back to 1994.

Abbreviated from Recreation Active Vehicle with 4-wheel-drive, the RAV4 was launched in 1994 after years of being teased. Launched as a three-door, it came with permanent four-wheel-drive. A roomier five-door model was launched in 1995.
A second-generation RAV4 was introduced in 2001, and was longer, wider and roomier than its predecessor.
It wasn't many years until the third RAV4 arrived in 2006. Now five-door only, it grew in size again while also becoming better to drive too. A part-time four-wheel-drive system was introduced to help efficiency too.
By 2013 the fourth-generation RAV4 was reaching showrooms, and its popularity continued to grow. Boasting a raft of new tech, in 2016 Toyota also included a full hybrid model.
In 2019 the fourth RAV4 arrived as a bolder-looking SUV, built around a new architecture and being better to drive and safer than its predecessors. Offered only as a hybrid in the UK, Toyota expanded the line-up in 2021 with a powerful 302bhp plug-in hybrid version.

What should I look for when buying a used RAV4?

Though many RAV4s are equipped with four-wheel-drive, it's not a true 4x4, so have a look underneath for any signs of damage from off-roading.
Tyre pressure warning lights are common, but often just come from the system not being set up correctly when new tyres are fitted.
Not all current-generation RAV4s had Apple CarPlay fitted as standard, so it's worth connecting a USB to see if it has it fitted. It can be retrofitted, but will cost around £100 to do so.
