SUVs, or sports utility vehicles, are growing increasingly popular because of their chunky bodywork and elevated driving position. They resemble all-terrain vehicles and offer the enlarged interior and boot space of these vehicles, but without the high running costs. They're great for city driving but with better visibility than many standard cars, and some of the visual appeal of a more rugged 4x4.

Why buy a SUV?

SUVs dominate the car market these days, with virtually all car manufacturers selling them, and some firms having an extensive line-up of models to choose from. There's plenty of appeal to them too – firstly from a styling point of view. With their chunkier, more rugged-looking design, they offer more street-cred than a typical family hatchback, MPV or estate car. Their higher ride height not only gives you and your passengers a better view of the road but helps to make it easier to get in and out.

They've become popular with the family market too, not only for the factors we've mentioned above but because they typically offer plenty of interior space and a big boot. Seven-seat SUVs are quite common too.

Which SUV should I buy?

The SUV is now the largest market segment around, and there's a huge amount of choice on offer. It very much depends on what you're looking for. If you like the look of an SUV but without the associated running costs, a front-wheel-drive crossover is an appealing option, with popular options including the Ford Puma, Nissan Juke and Vauxhall Mokka. If you find those a bit small, the mid-size category includes great family cars like the Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5 and Volkswagen Tiguan.

There are plenty of premium models in this class, too, with brands like Audi, BMW and Mercedes offering a huge amount of choice, ranging from compact models to large, six-figure seven-seaters.

What should I look for when buying SUVs?

Though many SUVs come with four-wheel-drive included as standard, plenty of SUVs aren't off-roaders per se, so have a good look on the underside of the car for any signs of damage where previous owners have taken a vehicle beyond its abilities. With these models often being bought by families, it's worth checking all the seats fold and slide as they should, and make sure no trim is excessively scuffed or missing.

There are other conventional things to think about, such as whether you need four-wheel-drive? Though it can be useful in winter or if you regularly go off the beaten track, if you live in a town or city, it's likely surplus to requirements, and will purely result in steeper running costs.

Can SUVs go off-road?

As we've already touched on, plenty of SUVs do come with four-wheel-drive, and though this can be useful to provide extra grip in traction in wet and wintery weather, it doesn’t mean that they're good off-road. Many SUVs are instead better suited to going through grass fields than they are through fords. If you do want an SUV that can go off-road, it's hard to go wrong with a Land Rover, which ensures all its four-wheel-drive models – big or small – can be used to go off-road in.

Can I buy a hybrid or electric SUV?

There are two hot topics in the automotive world at the minute – electrification and SUVs. Unsurprisingly many manufacturers combine the two, and there is a vast line-up of hybrid and electric SUVs on the market. In fact, many brands chose to launch their first EV as an SUV.So whether you're shopping for something affordable like an MG or more premium like an Audi, each offers both hybrid and electric SUVs.
