Expert Opinion

A true 'big car in a little car package', the Up! was a true breath of fresh air when it launched in 2012. Proving small city cars didn't have to mean cheap and low quality, the Up! was – and still is – a brilliant bit of engineering. Twinned with the Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo, which are both worth considering if you can't find an Up! you like, it offers fun styling and a simple yet durable interior. Available with a whole range of special editions over the years, each offering more in the way of style, it comes with plenty of equipment as standard and is a very youthful choice that's particularly popular with younger drivers. Those wanting something a bit hotter can also take a look at the pint-sized Up! GTI, which is huge fun to drive.

About Volkswagen Up

First shown in concept form in 2007, the Up! was Volkswagen's idea of the new 'modern day Beetle'. The show car was rear-wheel-drive like the original Beetle, but by the time it evolved into a production car in 2011, it had adopted the more traditional front-driven layout.

Retaining its fun design and small dimensions, Volkswagen offered the Up! in a choice of three- and five-door layouts, while an electric e-Up! would also launch, though we’re focusing primarily on the petrol cars here. Fitted with a range of small and efficient three-cylinder petrol engines, Volkswagen would later introduce the sportier GTI version, which is often considered a modern-day successor to the original Golf GTI.

Why buy a used Up?

If you want a small car but don't want to live with compromises, the Volkswagen Up! is most certainly worth a look. Measuring just 3.6m in length, this city car still offers an impressive amount of space. Though it is a strict four-seater, adults will still be able to sit in relative comfort in the rear thanks to its brilliant packaging. Five-door versions are unsurprisingly the more practical choice, though both offer a 251-litre boot, which is rather impressive for its size.

The Up! is also rather good fun behind the wheel, feeling light and agile. The regular petrol engines, while not especially powerful, are still a good match for the Up!, while they’re excellent on fuel as well – Volkswagen claiming they’ll return 55.4mpg, with CO2 emissions of 116g/km. It's a perfect option for around town, where its small dimensions, great visibility and light steering make it a breeze to drive.

If you're looking for more in the way of fun, the Up! GTI is a terrific choice. With a thrumming 113bhp turbocharged 1.0-litre TSI engine under the bonnet, this baby hot hatch is able to get from 0-60mph in 8.6 seconds. Though that might not seem all that quick by modern-day standards, combined with its lightweight and fun chassis, it is a true delight to drive, and great value for money too.

All of the latest Up! models get plenty of equipment too, including alloy wheels, a five-inch screen and air conditioning to name just a few highlights. And even though this Volkswagen might now be more than a decade old, it still looks and feels fresh and modern, helped by the various special edition versions on offer – including the Up! Beats and Black Edition.

Up updates

Here's a short history of the Volkswagen Up! which dates back to 2007.

Volkswagen unveiled the Up! concept in 2007, a funky low-cost city car that signalled the brand’s intentions.
It wasn't until 2011 that the Up! was shown in production form, with clear similarities to the concept. Offering impressive levels of space and fun styling, it soon became a hit.
First deliveries of the three-door started in Spring 2012, with a more practical five-door following later in the year.
Editions to the range included the Groove Up! and Rock Up! in 2013, with a Street Up! and Club Up! following in 2015.
Volkswagen gave the Up! a mid-life update in 2016, introducing new bumpers and lights, while a new Beats version joined the line-up. A more powerful 89bhp 1.0 TSI engine was also offered.
In 2018 Volkswagen launched the eagerly-awaited Up! GTI hot hatch, bringing 113bhp from its small 1.0 TSI engine.

Which used Up should I buy?

What should I look for when buying a used Up?

The DAB radio doesn't always work properly, so make sure you’re able to find and play your favourite stations.
Though not so much a fault, the automatic gearbox is quite jerky, with some owners finding it hard to adjust to.
Check the steering is okay on the test drive, as some have reported the power steering pulling the car to one side or even cutting out.
Look out for rust and signs of bubbling on the front wheel arches and around the fuel filler flap.
