Expert Opinion

First launched in 2012 to replace the outgoing S40, the V40 is a technologically modern and impressive, large hatchback, which is also one of the safest on the roads. Equipped with intelligent accident avoidance and road monitoring gadgets, the V40 has a five star Euro NCAP rating, and so is at the pinnacle of road safety. Luckily, there's also plenty in the drive to impress, and performance in the D4 diesel is particularly strong, while the steering is light and responsive, making it a breeze to handle at low speeds. Efficiency across all models is good - even in the top D4, returning more than 60mpg - which along with the typical Volvo reliability and impressive safety features, makes the V40 one of the most sensibly mature cars on the roads.

About Volvo V40

While the Volvo V40 initially was a compact estate car sold between 1995 and 2004, the name wasn’t used again until 2012, when the V40 became a premium hatchback rivalling the Mercedes A-Class and Volkswagen Golf. Putting a focus on style and safety, the V40 was the first car to feature an airbag in the bonnet that inflates in the event of a collision with a pedestrian, along with the first car in its class to come with autonomous emergency braking as standard.

Volvo also offered the V40 in a sportier-looking R-Design trim level, which was very popular, along with a more rugged Cross Country version. Offered with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, the V40 was revised in 2016 with a more modern design. The V40 was discontinued in 2019, and no direct replacement has followed on from it.

Why buy a used V40?

Volvo hasn’t always been regarded for its style, but the V40 most certainly is one of its best-looking cars to date. Improved further by the 2016 redesign, this compact hatchback looks modern and upmarket, while the option of the sportier-looking R-Design version really enhanced its appeal. If you like SUV-like styling, the Cross Country model is very appealing, and is the only real car in the premium hatchback class available with more rugged looks.

Another key area where the V40 excels is when it comes to safety, with Volvo aiming to make this hatchback no less safe than the brand’s far larger models. With innovations like an airbag in the bonnet for pedestrians and city autonomous emergency braking, it really was impressively safe for its time, while helping it to earn a five-star rating from Euro NCAP. When it was tested back in 2012, it was one of the safest cars that had ever been appraised.

The broad range of trims and, in particular, engines also adds to the appeal of the V40, with a wide range of petrol and diesel models on offer – along with the choice of both manual and automatic gearboxes on both versions.

Particular highlights are the efficient D2 diesel, which is able to return more than a claimed 70mpg, along with 99g/km CO2 emissions, as well as the flagship T5 model. Using a 245bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine, this all-wheel-drive hot hatch showcases another side to the V40, and is able to go from 0-60mph in as little as 5.8 seconds.

V40 updates

Here’s a short history of the second-generation Volvo V40, which launched in 2012.

Volvo unveiled the new V40 as its new premium family hatchback in 2012, bringing a sleek design and an impressive range of technology. It replaced the S40 and temporarily sat alongside the three-door C30.
Later in 2012 Volvo showed off a more rugged-looking Cross Country model, which brought chunkier styling and optional four-wheel-drive. The popular R-Design was also introduced, bringing sportier looks to the range.
In 2013, Volvo expanded the V40 range with an entry-level T2 petrol, along with a low-emission D2 automatic.
The V40 received a welcome mid-life update in 2016, receiving a more modern design with the introduction of ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights – as seen on other Volvo models – greater connectivity and new alloy wheels and colours.

What should I look for when buying a used V40?

The central locking can fail, so make sure that all doors lock with the remote key. If they don’t, it could be an expensive fix.
The interior quality of the V40 wasn’t quite as good as some rivals, so listen out for any annoying rattles and creaks on a test drive.
Keep an eye on the driver information display when on a test drive in case any warning messages pop up – these can be common and don’t always display upon first starting the car.
