This sporty, mid-size four door SUV has been turning heads since its launch in 2003. Anyone looking at a used XC90 should take their time to inspect what’s been personalised – as well as five levels of luxury - ES, SE, SE Lux, Executive and R-Design - there’s a host of selectable colours, alloy wheels and interiors. What IS standard on the XC90 is comfort, safety and reliability. The car has seven seats and a staggering 64 roomy combinations. At the front, thanks to Volvo's crumple zones, impacts are absorbed while the roof is re-inforced with strengthened steel. The XC90 offers Roll Stability Control, DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control), SIPS (Side Impact Protection System), and a WHIPS system which cradles the body to protect from whiplash. Choose from four petrol engines - 2.5 and 2.9 turbo, 3.2 I6 and 4.4 V8, or a 2.4 Diesel.

About Volvo XC90

Volvo has a long history of producing spacious and safe family cars, and these attributes lend themselves perfectly to the brand’s first seven-seat SUV, the XC90, which was introduced in 2002. Bringing a well-built interior and impressive levels of space, it was an immediate hit.

It was more than a decade before Volvo launched a second-generation XC90, though, but it brought some huge advances with it when it launched in 2015, showcasing a stunning new design language for Volvo, which has since been rolled out across the range. It also continues to set the benchmark for safety, while also introducing a new interior look and a new T8 plug-in hybrid.

Why buy a used XC90?

Large SUVs don’t get much better than the Volvo XC90, and this model offers a broad amount of appeal.

Let’s start with its comfort and refinement, two areas where this Swedish brand has long excelled. You’ll struggle to find a car that offers more comfort than this Volvo, and if you do plenty of miles, it’s a superb option. Particularly if you choose the top-spec Ultimate car, which comes as standard with adaptive air suspension, and massaging and contoured seats for sublime levels of comfort.

Its interior is also seriously impressive, offering all the quality, technology and luxury that you expect from an SUV of this price. Then there is the sheer level of spaciousness that the XC90 offers. Unlike some of its rivals, it is a seven–seater that’s suitable for that many adults, with even those in the third row getting a decent amount of space, and even a decent amount of boot space left. Sliding seats, chairs that fold flat into the floor and wide-opening doors are all things that lend the XC90 well to being a large family car.

The same applies to the XC90’s safety record too, as this Volvo remains one of the safest cars on the market. It pushed boundaries in this area when it launched in 2015, and it continues to lead the way – helped by its seriously impressive levels of driver assistance technologies, which are able to intervene to brake and steer the car out of danger to avoid crashes and subsequent injury.

A final reason to consider the XC90 is for its plug-in hybrid powertrain. Unlike competitors, this PHEV continues to come as standard with seven seats, while a 43-mile electric range (on the latest version) allows the possibility for some impressively low running costs if you charge the battery regularly.

XC90 updates

Here’s a short history of the Volvo XC90, which dates back to 2002.

Previewed by the 2001 Volvo Adventure Concept car, the Swedish manufacturer unveiled its XC90 in early 2002, with full production beginning later in the year. It was Volvo’s first true SUV, offering full seven-seat capability.
The first mid-life update came in 2007, when the XC90 received a restyled front end and interior upgrades.
After months of being teased, Volvo finally pulled the covers off the second-generation XC90 in 2014, with the model bringing a big uplift in quality, style and technology. A plug-in hybrid version was also offered when the model went on sale in 2015.
A revised version followed in 2019, gaining slight design changes, along with the addition of new mild-hybrid engine options.

Which used XC90 should I buy?

Volvo has recently revised the XC90 line-up, with three new trim levels on offer. Equipment highlights are as follows.

Volvo XC90 Core (replaces Momentum)

Automatic LED headlights with high beam assist, electric boot, reversing camera, 19-inch alloy wheels, four-zone climate control, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, leather upholstery, electric front seats, heated front and rear seats, autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping aid, blind spot monitoring, nine-inch touchscreen, integrated Google services, wireless smartphone charging.

Volvo XC90 Plus (replaces R-Design)

20-inch alloy wheels, electric opening panoramic sunroof, front LED fog lights, Harman Kardon sound system, 360-degree parking camera, active bending headlights, ambient lighting.

Volvo XC90 Ultimate (replaces Inscription)

21-inch alloy wheels, electronic air suspension, head-up display, dark tinted windows, Nappa soft leather upholstery, massaging and ventilated front seats, Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

What should I look for when buying a used XC90?

Many XC90s will have been used as a family car, so look out for any excessive wear and tear to the seats, carpets and trim. Also make sure all seats slide and fold as they should.
The XC90 is a large car, and even though it comes with plenty of sensors and cameras, parking bumps are inevitable, so have a good look around the car when viewing to look for any signs of damage that might need rectifying.
Mild-hybrid XC90s have caused owners some trouble, so make sure engines are smooth, quiet and responsive when test driving.
