Expert Opinion

While the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class might be the obvious choices in the compact executive car class, these shouldn’t necessarily be your default choices – as Jaguar’s XE shows. It’s a model that prioritises driving pleasure, style and quality, and is the younger brother to the XF in Jaguar’s saloon car line-up. Offering a range of swift petrol and diesel engines – with some of the latter being impressively efficient – it’s well worth a look. The latest versions also get a great infotainment system, which was one of the weaknesses of the earlier cars.

About Jaguar XE

Jaguar has a strong speciality when it comes to saloon cars, and for a long time this was the brand’s bread and butter. In terms of more compact saloons, the firm sold the X-Type between 2009 and 2011, but when that was discontinued it left a rather large gap in its line-up. It was a void not filled until 2011, when Jaguar introduced the XE as its sleek new compact saloon, slotting beneath the XF in the range.

Why buy a used XE?

While the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class might be the go-to models in the compact executive class, if you fancy something a bit different, the Jaguar XE is most certainly well worth a look.

The British brand has made some great saloon cars over the years, but we reckon the XE is one of its best yet. High up the reasons why you should buy an example is for the way it drives. In fact, it’s one of the best models in its segment in this area, thanks to agile handling that makes it great fun. Yet, at the same time, the XE also manages to be especially comfortable – ideal if you regularly do longer trips in your car.

While Jaguar has chopped and changed the XE’s engine line-up quite significantly over the years, it’s rare you get such a great line-up of powertrain options to choose from. While there aren’t any plug-in hybrid models available, both the diesel and petrol engine options will impress. The D200 is a particular highlight, with its 2.0-litre diesel engine delivering a superb mix of performance and efficiency – 0-60mph taking under seven seconds and Jaguar claiming it will return close to 60mpg.

It’s also very good value for money next to rivals, with both its new and used values undercutting competitors, and ensuring you get a lot more for your money than you would do with the equivalent from Audi or BMW, for example.

Though the interior of earlier XEs might have not felt quite as up to scratch as you might expect from a Jaguar, these niggles were addressed in 2019, with the model getting a far more high-quality cabin as part of a facelift. A larger touchscreen was also fitted, along with a digital dial system to help give the XE a far more modern feel than its predecessor.

XE updates

Here’s a short history of the Jaguar XE, which has been in showrooms since 2014.

Following a five-year absence from the segment, Jaguar revealed its new XE saloon in September 2014, offering the promise of a great driving experience, the latest technology and a great range of engines. It reached showrooms in 2015.
A year later, Jaguar introduced all-wheel-drive (the car is rear-wheel-drive as standard), along with an updated infotainment system.
For the 2018 model year, the XE received new engines and additional tech, including a digital dial display.
The most oddball moment in the XE’s history came with the arrival of the ‘XE SV Project 8’ – a wild stripped-out saloon car that was Jaguar’s most powerful road car at the time.
A facelift XE reached showrooms in 2019, bringing with it a more modern design, a much-improved infotainment system and additional standard equipment.

What should I look for when buying a used XE?

The XE is often used as a motorway cruiser, so may suffer from more stone chips than most. It’s worth having a good check over the front and and lower areas to see if this is the case.
Touchscreens and digital dials occasionally suffer from glitches, so make sure everything works as it should.
While not so much a fault, the XE is quite compact by class standards, so check its interior offers enough room for you and your family, etc.
