Expert Opinion

First launched in 2008, the Jaguar XF is an exemplary mix of performance, refinement and style, and one which seriously challenges the luxury German cars who would normally have a class like this wrapped up. Laden with wooden panels, leather, touch-screen sat navs and voice control, it is impressively equipped, yet this is arguably only secondary to its smooth and responsive handling, raw power, and the refined ride it offers up on the road. Granted, its not something you want to turn up to a Green Peace meeting in (it being decidedly environmentally unfriendly in comparison to other modern cars), but if you can afford it, the draw of the 3.0 litre, 271bhp diesel, may be too strong to resist.

About Jaguar XF

For decades Jaguar has had a great reputation for producing excellent saloon cars, but the brand’s early 2000s models weren’t quite up to the same level expected from the British brand. In 2007, Jaguar strongly returned to form with the XF – a stylish, sporty saloon that replaced the S-Type. The range would expand to include a V8-powered XFR version, along with a Sportbrake estate model in 2012.

A second-generation XF arrived in 2015, with the model being particularly of note because of its aluminium structure, which helped to make it the lightest car in its class by some margin. It also showcased a stylish new design and overhauled interior.

Why buy a used XF?

Jaguars have long been regarded for their sporting prowess, and even in a more sensible model like the XF, the British firm has still managed to make something that is genuinely enjoyable to drive. Thanks to that aluminium architecture, it’s quite noticeably lighter than rivals like the Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class, while the steering is sharp and responsive. At the same time, the XF still has that comfortable and supple ride that Jaguar’s saloons are also renowned for.

It’s also quite the looker to our eyes. While German rivals might play it quite safe when it comes to styling, the XF manages to be a far sportier-looking option. All versions these days come in the more stylish ‘R-Dynamic’ grille, and with its slim headlights and sleek lines, it’s arguably the most glamorous of all the models in this class. It’s worth noting that the first-generation XF continues to look stylish too, even more than a decade on from when it arrived.

The latest models also come with a particularly generous list of standard equipment, including 18-inch alloy wheels, electric and heated leather sports seats and Jaguar’s latest 11.4-inch touchscreen, known as the Pivi Pro. If your budget would stretch to the latest 2020-onwards model, it’s worth making the jump for the XF’s much-improved cabin.

You can continue to choose between the saloon and Sportbrake estate versions; though the latter can be quite hard to find on the used market, it’s worth searching, as they’re even more stylish to look at, as well as far more useful, thanks to a large 565-litre boot.

XF updates

Here’s a short history of the Jaguar XF, which dates back to 2006.

In 2006, Jaguar announced the new XF as its upcoming ‘sports saloon’, to replace the S-Type.
The 2007 C-XF concept car previewed what was to come from the ‘next generation XF.
The production XF was revealed in August 2007, showing a stylish, sporty yet refined saloon car. An expanded range in 2009 saw the addition of the XFR performance model.
The XF was revised in 2012, bringing a more modern look from slimmer headlights and more in-car technology. Later in 2012 Jaguar also debuted a Sportbrake estate model.
Jaguar revealed its second-generation XF in 2015, showcasing a stylish design, new interior and all-new aluminium architecture, which made it the lightest car in its segment. The Sportbrake estate option reached dealers in 2017.
Jaguar revised the XF in 2021, kitting it out with a much-improved touchscreen system and refreshed design. A slimmed-down range also helped to bring list prices down by as much as 18 per cent.

Which used XF should I buy?

The latest Jaguar XF is available with four main trim levels. Equipment highlights are as follows.

What should I look for when buying a used XF?

Early second-generation XFs (2015/16 cars) had a few quality issues, so listen out for any signs of knocks and rattles on test drives.
The touchscreen can be quite glitchy, so it’s worth spending the time to check it’s working as it should, and make sure that all the functions it controls respond as they should.
Leather seats can wear quite quickly, so inspect for any excess damage.
